trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxasole 160 mg/800 mg tablet bid,x 1-2 weeks $1.71/week
or ampicillin 500 mg, qid x 1-2 weeks $4.45/week
Second-line therapies:
norfloxacin 400 mg bid, x 1-2 weeks $30.51/week
or ciprofloxacin 500 mg bid, x 1-2 weeks $35.08/week
-Salmonella infection acquired outside developed countries is likely to be resistant to ampicillin.
-Unlike immunocompetent patients, people with HIV require treatment of uncomplicated Salmonella enterocolitis to reduce the rate of complications such as bacteremia.
