Trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole 160 mg/800 mg tablet, once daily or 3 times/week $0.12/tablet
Second-line therapies:
1. diaphenylsulfone 100 mg, 3 times a week $0.59/week
or 50-100 mg, once daily $0.68-1.37/week
AND
pyrimethamine 50 mg, twice weekly $4.28/week
OR
2. pentamidine aerosolized 300 mg, once/month via Respigard II nebulizer $68.61/month
OR
Initial dose 60 mg per dose x 5 doses over 2 weeks via Fisoneb nebulizer $68.61/2 weeks
Maintenance 60 mg, every 2 weeks via Fisoneb nebulizer $68.61/2 weeks
-Prophylaxis is indicated for any patient with HIV with: a history of PCP; a CD4 count below 0.2 x 10(9) cells/L; a CD4 count below 0.3 x 10(9) cells/L and signs of immunosuppression; or a CD4 count below 14%.
